Roquetas de Mar is one of the most amazing and lively tourist destinations in the coast of Andalusia. Whatever time of year, the resources are endless: beaches, nature, cultural activities, etc.
This tourist town boasts restaurants, bars, discos, a tourist resort, all sorts of shops and a good public transport network.
The seaside promenade and adjoining streets are lively and offer lots of entertainment, with fashion, jewellery and gift shops, shopping centres, the Aquarium, the Congress and Exhibition Centre, and the impressive Roquetas de Mar Auditorium. And, of course, first-rate restaurants and accommodation.
One of the main historical buildings is the Castillo de Santa Ana. The castle currently houses a museum where a variety of cultural activities take place. Two other major historical monuments are the Cerillos Watchtower, from the Nasrid period, and the eighteenth century Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, which preserves an altarpiece by Jesus de Perceval. A few more sites not to be missed are the lighthouse, the Chapel of Santa Cruz and the archaeological site of La Ribera de La Algaida, discovered in 1859 and containing archaeological remains of great cultural interest.
The bullring is one of the most modern in the whole of Spain and is used as a venue for massive live concerts.
The marina and the fishing harbour are a clear sign of Roquetas’s seafaring tradition. The Aguadulce marina offers a wide range of amenities, as well as the best moorings in this stretch of coastline.
On the other hand, the picturesque Fishing Harbour of Roquetas is packed with traditional fishing and sport fishing boats. Both places are very popular with tourists.
Yet, we insist, the best thing you can do in this town is to enjoy its amazing beaches. The most famous is the beach of Aguadulce, followed by La Bajadilla and Las Salinas. Of course, you should not forget to taste some of the typical local dishes, such as gurullos with lobster or the zarzuela de pescado y marisco, a sort of seafood casserole.
A step away from Roquetas de Mar, there are several golf courses.
Almeria airport is 37 km from Roquetas de Mar.
